AVOIDING TOXINS

The following excerpt is from the personal growth
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.

It is common sense that we need to minimize toxins, for we do not tolerate them well. Common toxins can take many forms: toxins in or on our foods, toxins in our homes, people and relationships who are toxic, toxic ideas and the toxic effects of lack of exercise.

While there has been much emphasis on food toxins, it would be beneficial if there were similar emphasis on other toxins. We all learned not to drink the chemicals in the containers under our sinks, but what about the vapors from those chemicals? How about the vapors from the garden, painting and house-repair chemicals in our basements and garages? We spend billions cleaning up toxins miles away from us, yet we typically do nothing about similar items in our own homes. Common home toxins have been found to cause many negative bodily reactions, not just for children who might ingest them, but also for many who inhale vapors. For toxins our defenses are like water dikes; once they start to leak, they start leaking more and more. Therefore, it is our total toxin load over our entire lifetimes that is relevant, not just whether we are currently showing negative symptoms. I shall discuss toxic people, relationships, emotions and ideas in more detail throughout the book. While some people automatically consider some "negative" feelings and emotions to be toxic, I believe that only those that don't go away are toxic (see Chapter 9). The toxic effects on our bodies caused by lack of physical play are often discounted and ignored. Being a couch potato shifts body chemistry in unhealthy ways, destroys muscle mass, causes depression and "yuckiness" and makes us more receptive to diseases.
