MANY MEN STILL ABDICATE THEIR PARENTING ROLES
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
Many men still underestimate the importance of and necessity
for a strongly-involved male parenting role and the
self-satisfaction one derives from it. This was not always the
case. Until the early 1800s, most child-rearing manuals were
directed at men, who then did have the say about child-rearing.
With the advance of industrialization, the father was more and
more removed from the home. The result was that mothers made
more of the child-rearing decisions. Men really lost an
important part of the human existence with this shift. Whenever
we lose parts of ourselves, it acts like trauma, and we become
stressed until we regain that part of ourselves.

My guess is that this loss of parenting expertise is an
important factor why men do not live as long as women. For it
was also in the early 1800s that women first started living
longer than men. Perhaps there will be someone who will do the
research here. Do fathers who are full participants in raising
their children live longer than fathers who leave such matters
to their wives?
No matter the results of such longevity research, parental
abdication by men remains a root cause of many of our society's
ills. At all levels of schooling, on television, and from both
women and men, there needs to be increased and persistent
demands for male parenting responsibility. Many movies and
television programs are now often showing the joys and pleasures
of male parenting, and schools are now providing much-needed
parenting training. Millions of women are now loosening a few
parental reins. Millions of men are now emotionally available to
their children. We have come a long way. We can celebrate what
we have accomplished as a society without forgetting that there
is more to be done.
