LATCHKEY CHILDREN DON'T DO AS WELL
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
Not surprisingly, studies have shown that children with
significant amounts of time with no adult supervision (often
called latchkey children) demonstrate more delinquent and
antisocial behavior than their supervised peers. Given their
obvious capabilities for some independence, they need activity
leaders; and a ratio of 10-20 children to one activity leader
is feasible. Thus, the solution to the latchkey problem does not
entail vast sums of money. There are many communities that are
now providing such services in after-school programs that are
relatively affordable. Money spent today on such a program would
more than pay for itself later on because of lower crime rates.
| The majority of us can be dreadfully inhumane if we are following directions from a person in authority.
|
If such after-school programs are not available, then parents
may need to reexamine the usual alternatives of relatives,
trading with other parents, paid-for activities, paid child
care, or split schedules for the two parents. (An alternative
for one tow truck driver was to bring his two children with him
when out on a tow. I wonder how many companies would allow such?
Perhaps companies could change their rules and allow such
employees to pay for required additional insurance.) Also, with
the explosion of horrific commutes, computers, modems and home
work stations, many companies are willing to try out
working-at-home arrangements. Unhappily, there are still
companies (and other employers such as government agencies) who
have yet to realize it may be in their best interests to provide
such special arrangements.
