CELEBRATION TIME
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
The essential definition of sexism is that one sex feels
superior to another, and similarly the belief that one race is
inherently superior to another defines racism. Being anti-gay
implies a judgment that gays are not OK. So how many believe
today they are superior to women/ blacks or that gays are not
OK? A minority! Instead of the wide majority who believed those
things 50 years ago, perhaps fewer than 20% today believe they
are inherently a superior gender, a superior race or the only OK
sexual orientation. This means that 80% of the population is
not, according to strict definition, sexist, racist or anti-gay.
Doesn't that strike you as cause for celebration? We have come a
long way. We do have the makings for a rather harmonious society
because of these changes. I believe things really are much
better than what is being promulgated by all the Stage II
blamers. Later I'll discuss more about how to do what remains to
be done, but please celebrate now what we have accomplished!

Historically, a generation or more ago, this society was in
Stage I denial about many things, most particularly the effects
of sexist, racist and anti-gay opinions. For these opinions
negatively affected our whole society, including those so
voicing such pejorative opinions. As groups of women,
African-Americans and gays became more aware, they tended to
stop Stage I denying and start into Stage II blaming. Angry
demonstrations, civil disobedience and faultfinding of others
were and are the manifestations of this blaming. This worked to
change millions of us!
A vital question to ask is, "How far have
we come?" The answer is, "We have come a long way, baby, and not
just women." All major societal groups have changed
significantly in the past 50 years, much more than commonly
thought.
