ONE-TIME-AROUND VS. PAST LIFE REINCARNATION
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
Knowledge of one's previous lives, which is available to
virtually everyone via hypnosis, automatically changes one's
perspective. The disabled and chronically ill discover that such
difficulties are usually only for a lifetime or two out of many.
A macho male may discover a wimpy female or gay lifetime. The
feminist may discover that last time around she was a man who
thought women were scum. Gays and lesbians discover they were
homophobic heterosexuals in other lifetimes. African-Americans
discover white lives, also black lives as the majority race.
Caucasians discover lives as blacks. Parents whose children die
young discover long lives with such children in earlier times.
Such knowledge of prior lives changes one's current beliefs and
one's feelings about this life's problems and difficulties.
Acceptance is a frequent result. This acceptance does not lead
to inaction but to taking much more effective action to change
one's current situation.
The history of beliefs in reincarnation goes back to the dawn
of time and was even present in several early Christian
teachings. Then, during the Dark Ages, the Catholic Church
decided that such beliefs did not help to promote the authority
of the clergy or the church. Why pay that much attention to my
clergyman if I'll just cycle through again no matter whether I
follow what he says or not? Why fear hell and damnation if I
just come back here to earth if I fail to do it right this time
around? One would expect that clergy concerned with their own
power and influence over their followers would come to consider
the idea of reincarnation to be extremely sacrilegious. So they
did. The words of Christ, as written in the gospels, however,
seem to neither condemn nor approve the idea. The topic
apparently is not mentioned. In the tradition of Judaism, on the
other hand, there has been significant approval of the idea of
reincarnation. And, of course, major Eastern religions such as
Hinduism and Buddhism have reincarnation as an integral part of
their beliefs.

If we would want them, most of us could have out-of-body experiences. They are useful for giving us different perspectives than those that are currently popular. |
The question is always raised, "If I had those lives, why don't
I remember them?". That question can be answered as follows: if
this is Reincarnational Earth School, where for our advanced
degree we need to experience different sides of the same
experience (such as man/woman, gay/straight, black/white,
cynic/idealist, expressive/retentive), then we would have too
much knowledge of the opposite experience if we remembered prior
lives. Therefore, our other lives need to be generally shielded
from us. Questions often are raised too about the increasing
population on this earth. Reincarnationists have explained this
by saying (1)that new souls continue to come into our system,
(2)that our higher selves can have more than one soul here at a
time, and (3)that we are now coming back more often with less
time between incarnations. (This last point was corroborated by
Helen Wambach's research in Reliving Past Lives: The Evidence
from Hypnosis.) A major objection to beliefs in reincarnation
comes from the scientific community, which "doesn't see any past
lives." Most scientists haven't looked very hard and tend to
discount even their own members who have some personal
experience. To them, this author says, "Try it and then see if
you are still a non-believer." My direct experience has led me
to the opposite opinion about reincarnation from the opinion I
had when I was making my living as a nuclear engineer many years
ago.
The advantages to believing in one-time-around are: (1)that I
can feel the comfort of being in the majority of this society
(small comfort) and (2)that it allows me to be a perpetually
unhappy helpless victim who never has to assume responsibility
for my own happiness. I don't want that for myself. Do you?
