FEELINGS

The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.

Many therapists have elevated feelings almost to godlike status. They are extremely important. If you cannot feel, you are most definitely psychologically unhealthy. Also, the more you cannot feel, the unhealthier you are. There has been much essential therapy emphasis on learning to feel and to express emotions.

Full expression (ventilation) of one's thoughts and emotions is often a useful step in therapy. But one must also CHANGE and not be stuck ventilating the same stuff over and over.

Relatively noncontroversial is the idea that if I am blocking an uncomfortable emotion, then its expression will usually ease my discomfort. The ease, however, will be temporary if the emotion was either improperly directed at the wrong target or was the wrong emotion itself (see Chapter 9). More controversial is the idea that if I have an uncomfortable feeling, then I can always change that feeling by changing my thinking as discussed earlier in Chapter 8.

Some therapists and clients have spent so much energy regaining feelings and emotions after repressing/ denying them for decades that they lose sight of the fact that feelings and emotions are transitory. They stay stuck in the same unhappy feelings over and over. The basis for the cognitive styles of therapy (such as Option, Rational-Emotive and Cognitive-Behavioral) is that such uncomfortable feelings and emotions can often be made to go away just by changing one's thinking (see Chapter 8).

Feelings are vital, but if the end result of feeling them is not the feeling of calmness, you may be stuck.
