THERAPISTS IN THERAPY
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
The majority of my clients for the past two years have been
other therapists coming to me because I advertised that I could
help them resolve difficulties they may have had for some time.
These difficulties seem to have resisted many prior therapy
efforts. For some problems therapists are stuck in Stage I
denial as described in Chapter 4 (denying problems such as
unhappiness-causing spiritual systems). For other problems they
are stuck in the blaming Stage II (blaming their children, their
spouses or their parents for many upset feelings). They may be
stuck making the same unhappy choices over and over (the
helplessness of Stage II). Fortunately, most have been willing
to do the work necessary to move through the stuck places. To expect your therapist to be without any hangups or
difficulties is unrealistic. Therapists too are here on Earth
School to learn psychological lessons. Often the best therapy is
done by therapists who have traveled your problem route. But
that does not mean they are problem-free. "A therapist can only
take you as far as he/ she has gone" is an adage worth
remembering when you interview potential therapists.

There is an old widely circulated belief that therapists become
therapists in an attempt to resolve their own problems. There is
some truth to that, but it is not an either-or situation. It is
a both-and situation; they become therapists to help both
themselves and others. There is strong ethical training for
therapists which emphasizes recognizing when one's own problems
are in the way. Too often, people use therapist imperfection as
a tool to avoid therapy, thus remaining fixated with their own
lemons.
