THERAPISTS WILL DISAGREE WITH THESE WORDS
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
Like the rest of today's society, therapists are a diverse
group with quite different ideas about almost any topic you
might raise. Several of my colleagues heard the title of this
book and responded from a framework of, "Such a book will take
clients away from me." Instead, this book could well propel
people into getting help because they read that a particular
feeling or emotion or set of unhappy ideas can be changed! If
they can't change by self-help methods, they will seek out
professional help. This might translate to more clients for
therapists, not less, because more than 90% of the population is
not currently in therapy. For most of those in treatment, a
self-help book such as this one is most unlikely to end therapy
because they do need help from a therapist. But it could
encourage them to negotiate a shift in therapy emphasis to areas
that might have been overlooked. Good!
| Families in therapy together? Yes, often the most effective treatment for some or all family members is family therapy. |
Colleagues will disagree with much of what has been written in
this book. The "thinking" ideas in Chapter 8 will tend to be
wholly accepted only by those strongly involved with "thinking"
therapies such as Rational-Emotive, Option, and
Cognitive-Behavioral. Many of those "thinking" ideas will be
rejected (at times scornfully) by therapists with other
approaches. Similarly, many "emotional" ideas in Chapters 9 & 10
will be rejected by therapists with different views. Many of the
spiritual ideas in Chapter 11 will likely be rejected by most
therapists except transpersonal therapists. All these therapist
disagreements confuse consumers in their searches for therapists.
