FINDING A THERAPIST - SETTING THERAPY GOALS

There is no one therapy treatment that is considered standard, as there would be for your ruptured appendix. If you are a planning type, you will be seeking out information about a prospective therapist. Do so. You will feel better. Often you will do better than the impulsive therapist shopper. For trust in and rapport with a therapist are often (but not always) important to the success of the therapy. You can often find out that information beforehand. Trust yourself. A specific approach you could take involves using "I-Want" lists on your part. Using this book and your own wishes, make a list of "I-Wants" that are important to you. Reduce your list to three or four of your most important "I-Wants." Take this list to discuss with prospective therapists. These might become your therapy goals.


More than 90% of the work in effective therapy is done OUTSIDE the therapy hour.

If you are an impulsive type, you probably will throw darts at the telephone listings of therapists or seek out your friend's therapist. Careful planning is not for you. Sometimes you will do better by this method than the careful planners. For there are times when a very different therapist, one you would never select through careful planning, will be the most effective for you.


Any therapist is likely to be an improvement over none at all if you are in significant/ severe distress. If you discover you have chosen the wrong therapist, find someone different.
