The below excerpt is from the self help psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.|
One of my goals is to empower you, the reader, to accomplish more personal growth and healing. Part of that empowerment is to realize that the therapist does not really run the show. If a client really wishes to heal, grow and change, the therapist can help. Otherwise, the therapist is helpless.
All too often clients presume that the therapist knows what is best for them and knows the answers; more often than not, that is just therapist and client wish-fulfillment. If you are thinking about hiring someone or have already done so, I suggest you read Chapter 18 titled Therapists and Therapies.
|More than 90% of the work in effective therapy is done OUTSIDE the therapy hour.
Upon hearing the title of this book, one therapist friend remarked that I would not be popular with some of my colleagues. We laughed together, for both of us knew that popularity had never been my strength nor was it my goal for this work. Instead, for both myself and the reader, my goal is movement along our individual and collective paths toward inner peace.
