FIND YOUR OPTIMUM THERAPEUTIC FOCUS
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
Do you enjoy quizzes about yourself and discovering the "right"
answers to such quizzes? Such quizzes are often found
in your favorite magazines. There are quizzes for each of these book chapters.
Of course, there really are no right or wrong answers to most of
the questions. But certain answers cause us comfort and ease
while others cause us grief and unhappiness. We do have choices
about whether we think A or B. A significant portion of some
thinking therapies (see Chapter 8) is helping clients to change
their thinking from A to B, from unhappiness-causing reasoning
to happiness-causing reasoning. Such therapies work!
| Most of us psychologically are like fixer-upper houses, structurally sound but with a number of possible psychology improvement projects.
|
Human existence can be considered a house of four rooms, the
rooms of (1)the body, (2)the mind, (3)the emotions and
(4)spirituality. Therapies usually concentrate on just one or
two of these rooms. Yet for maximum health, it has been stated
that we need to visit each of these rooms every day, if only
briefly.
If you have selected a therapy that concentrates exclusively in
one or two rooms, you do need to be aware that your growth may
be happening in only one or two rooms. You need to make a
decision about how much, when or if the other rooms are visited.
Ultimately, any one-room focus will likely need to change
(tomorrow, next month, next year or several years in the
future). There are times when focusing upon one room is entirely
appropriate, and I do not intend to imply that you should select
only a four-room therapist. Chapters 3-11 discuss these four
rooms in more depth.
