WORK: DOING WHAT YOU LOVE
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
The best prescription for improving your happiness might well
be, "Do what you love." In other words, follow your work passion
wherever it may lead. While it may seem foolish to quit a
current job because of potential loss of high pay, medical
insurance or security, that is sometimes our best course. Marsha
Sinetar wrote a valuable book about the topic, Do What You Love,
The Money Will Follow. This book reassured its readers that the
money would follow, but not necessarily immediately, if one made
a work change in the direction of one's passion. Most of us take
no action hoping that money and security will be there before we
change vocations. Such is often not the case.
| Most of us get our competitive urges satisfied by either shopping or sports (armchair or otherwise).
|
Doing what you love may seem impossible; but the stress, pain,
injury and disease resulting from clinging to your old work may
kill you. If nothing else, I suggest that you take a few small
steps in the direction of your passion. If we believe this to be
a safe universe (see Chapter 11), then such a leap into the job
unknown becomes easier.
This author knows well the results of choosing occupations that
pay poorly. Because of several career changes and other choices
for lower-paying work, I have often been at the bottom of the
financial heap as compared with peers. Despite the financial
strains, I have no regrets about having followed my work passion
wherever it led. Otherwise, I would no doubt be unhappily stuck
in stress or addictive behavior.
