THE GLASS CEILING
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
A favorite topic recently has been the unlikelihood of certain
groups to attain high-level jobs. "Of course this is caused
solely by discrimination" is the cry of many. Maybe not.

Nothing is miserable but what is thought so, and contrarywise, every estate is happy if he that bears it be content... Boethius 500 A.D. |
Historically there used to be the same type of glassceiling
for Catholics and Jews, but in those days no one called it a
glass ceiling. Today, Catholics and Jews are well represented at
top levels. But the process of reaching those top job levels is
more than just overcoming discrimination. It also entails a wide
range of past executive jobs. Until groups have that wide array
of executive experience, the glassceiling will be in evidence.
There has been significant black executive experience in the
military. One result was Colin Powell, our first black Chairman
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. If any group wants to break
through this invisible ceiling in significant ways, then they must
first see the need for and then go after this wide array of
executive experience. The glass ceiling is not caused solely by
discrimination.
Does your being unhappy about the current statistics (which
support the idea of the glassceiling) help you or those
statistics? Please read Chapter 8 for more about changing your
unhappiness (and in the process becoming more effective in
making the necessary societal changes).
